Veruela
One of the main attractions to visit during your stay in the castle-palace of Bulbuente is the Monastery of Santa Maria de Veruela.
The Cistercian Order settled on the slopes of the magical Moncayo in the twelfth century, in the fertile lowlands of the Huecha River. The white monks took root in these lands and their economic prosperity was essential for Veruela and its abbots to have an important political notoriety in the Kingdom of Aragon. Prayer and work were the pillars on which the life of its inhabitants was based.
The Cistercian monastery was a miniature city dedicated to prayer, devotion, silence and work, with spaces of singular beauty and impressive for their sobriety. They are buildings of quality stone and well worked, with a monastic plan where every last detail was studied, full of harmony and beauty.
In the 19th century it was an inn and refuge for numerous romantic travelers, among them the Bécquer brothers.
In 1976 the General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Spanish State ceded it in usufruct to the Diputación de Zaragoza for its rehabilitation and conservation, since then the rooms have been recovered and restored.
Veruela has its own cultural program: concerts, poetry recitals, exhibitions, theater… modern art that integrates and values the art that centuries ago the monks of austerity made.
